BILLY OCEAN

Billy Ocean (Leslie Sebastian Charles, 21 de janeiro de 1950, Trindade e Tobago) premiado cantor e compositor pop dos anos 70 e 80.

Leslie Charles mudou-se para o Reino Unido aos 8 anos e foi lá que, em 1974, já com o nome artístico que conhecemos, gravou o seu primeiro single. O sucesso mundial chegou nos anos 80, com Caribbean Queen, uma canção que via o seu título modificado de acordo com o continente em que era editada. Por isso, foi “African Queen” e também “European Queen”.

Mas o tema que guardo como referência é Loverboy, se bem que o seu êxito em Portugal não se tenha resumido a esta canção. Basta recordarmos títulos como Suddenly, When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going (tema principal do filme A Joia do Nilo), e There’ll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry). O canto do cisne da carreira de Billy Ocean chegou em 1988 com o tema Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car.

Depois de um período em que esteve envolvido em drogas, agora está mais espiritual e dedica-se à jardinagem, a tocar flauta de pan e a dar formação vocal.
